Project Overview
Enrich is an app that makes searching for volunteering a more accessible, personalized, and social experience.

My responsibilities included user research, feature ideation, prototyping, visual design, and user testing.
The Problem
Finding new volunteer opportunities in your area can be difficult. There are many personal preferences to consider when searching for volunteer opportunities.
A simple Google search leads to an overwhelming amount of information- it’s nearly impossible to filter through all of the organizations to find the right fit. Most volunteers have to rely on word-of-mouth to find new opportunities.

We wanted to make searching for new volunteer opportunities as accessible and efficient as possible. Additionally, we want this app to support the needs of organizations by making it easier to recruit volunteers with the right skills.
Project Outcome
Our project goal is to make an app that connects volunteers to new opportunities by tailoring search results to a user’s preferences and qualifications.
By matching volunteers to organizations based on preferences and qualifications, volunteers will be spend less time sorting through organizations, and organizations will spend less time searching for qualified volunteers.
Our Approach to Research
We conducted our research with 2 user groups:
-
Volunteers
-
Objective: Understand how and why they search for new volunteer opportunities, and their experiences volunteering with organizations.
-
-
Organizations
-
Objective: Understand how and why they recruit new volunteers, and their experiences recruiting and managing volunteers.
-

We also did some desktop research and sent out surveys.
User Insights
We conducted user interviews with 10 people who volunteer, and 5 employees from non-profits who employ volunteers on a daily basis. These are the insights we gathered:
People volunteer to make friends and feel a part of the community.
To boost engagement in the app and increase motivation for volunteering, we added a social feature where users can message volunteer friends and view who is interested in certain events.
Out of everyone that wants to volunteer, only 15% actually do.
The main issues holding people back from volunteering are the lack of awareness of specific opportunities, and inconvenience. To solve these issues, we added a distance radius preference and created a feature for organizations to post about certain events.
Recruiting volunteers with the necessary skills is very time-consuming.
Through the app, organizations can easily advertise themselves, post about events, and set expectations about what they need from volunteers. This helps the volunteers screen events that are the right fit for them. By matching volunteers with organizations based on skill, we help organizations quickly recruit qualified volunteers.
New Product Vision
Based on our research, we revised our product vision to better fit the needs of both volunteers and organizations.
We want our app to achieve the following:
-
Volunteers can socialize and make volunteer friends in the app.
-
Volunteers will make a real difference in their community.
-
Exploring new volunteer opportunities will be a more informative and convenient process.
-
Organizations will receive more high quality volunteers.
-
Organizations will spend less time spent recruiting.

User Testing
I conducted usability testing with 5 participants.

Observe if users can accomplish the task of finding an event within their schedule, then signing up for the event.
-
Identify areas of improvement that could enhance the user's performance.
Before
After
2 features were left unused and added clutter.
Can I filter by specific times?
Added a time-of-day filter for a more accurate search.
What if I am looking specifically for work with animals?
Added a filter for interests and skills chosen in sign-up process.
Can I save events that I like for later?

Sign Up Process
Set the distance radius, and choose interests and skills that will be used in the matching process.
Explore Organizations-
Dating-App Style
Users are matched with organizations within their set distance based on skills and interests. If the user is interested, they swipe right and events from those organizations will show up in the feed.
Sign up for Events
Once users select the organizations they like on the explore page, events posted by those organizations will show up in the events feed. Users can save events they are interested in, filter by day, time, and distance.
